With its well-established reputation in the vegetable industry combined with a pleasant working environment, East-West Seed Co. happily accommodated a 10-week Work Immersion Program of Senior High School students from Marian College of Baliuag. The program ran from late 2019 until the first quarter of 2020 with one whole day of activity each week.
Eighteen Grade 12 students were supervised by Ms. Melanie Cruz of East-West Seed Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with the HR Department of East-West Seed Co. With Melanie's expertise in training facilitation and grounds management, VeggiEskwela-themed sessions were conducted to equip these youngsters with skills needed in the agricultural workplace setting. It included a combination of short lecture-discussions and actual exposure of students in the field.
During the immersion, students were given a “mini farm” area where they did the step-by-step procedures in growing plants, farm planning, preparing natural fertilizers, monitoring the crops in the garden, setting-up vermicomposting up to harvesting of their grown vegetables. Students were enriched with knowledge in vegetable gardening activities and how the different processes should take place.
It was indeed a successful partnership between the school and East-West Seed which opened its doors for the young learners into the field of agriculture. Who knows? They might be the next generation of farmers!
